The second annual Salsarita’s Teacher of the Year winners have been announced! Our contest is designed to recognize the hard work from teachers over the past year. We had over 1,000 nominations for this award, so instead of picking one winner, we picked five winners. We are excited to introduce you to the winners of this year’s Teacher of the Year!
Next, we meet Rachel H. who teaches at River Bend Middle School in Claremont, NC. We asked her a few questions to get to know her!

Why did you want to become a teacher?
I wanted to become a teacher ever since I was a little girl. My sister and I would play school and of course I was the teacher. Growing up, I had so many great teachers in school that left a positive impact on my life. To this day, I want to continue sharing my passion for learning with others in hope that it would change their mind and heart.
How long have you been teaching?
I’ve been teaching 12 years math and/or science.
Do you have a favorite classroom moment/memory?
Tons, but my favorite would have to be when we took the 8th graders to NYC.
What’s your favorite thing about teaching?
Middle school is an adventure and I enjoy building those relationships with the students. We both learn something new daily. Also, every once in a while, I will hear from former students, and it means so much!
What’s your LEAST favorite thing about teaching?
Everything is unpredictable!
What are your favorite things to do outside of the classroom?
Spending time with my family. My children keep me busy with sports!
What inspires you to be the best teacher for your students?
To reciprocate the love that they show me daily and being a positive role model in their life. I love when students have those “ah ha” moments and understand what they learned. It’s very rewarding!
What’s your go-to order at Salsarita’s?
Chicken nachos with LOTS of queso!
